Epilepsy in cats

The epilepsy is a chronic disease that is characteristic of humans, but also attacks our pets such as dogs and cats. Although it seems not so common in cats and dogs, feline epilepsy is a disease that must be treated properly, because it is as we said, is extended in time, and is quite unpleasant for the suffering it may cause in the pet and the owner or family to witness the symptoms of an attack.

The epilepsy is a disease that has different possibilities of origin. It is characterized by seizures that occur on a recurring basis and can be seizures or convulsions. These seizures are caused by an electrical discharge from neurons in the brain that have different origins.

Seizures often manifest with loss of consciousness and again without loss of consciousness. The main cause of epilepsy in cats are hydrocephalus, congenital disorders, metabolic diseases, inflammations caused by viruses, bacteria, vascular problems, injuries, poisoning and even nutritional deficiencies.

The secret of the treatment of epilepsy in cats depends on the correct diagnosis of the origin of the disease by the veterinarian. If this is correctly identified etiology, therapy is highly effective and generally involves the application of anticonvulsants. Mainly, medicines are used like the diazepam, phenobarbital and primidone.

What types of therapy apply to your pet in the case of this disease depends on several factors: cat anatomy, precipitating factors, age, periodicity, symptomatic manifestations, and so on.
